How to Stamp Leather Patterns Leathercraft Tutorial | Custom Leather Designs

How to Stamp Leather Patterns Leathercraft Tutorial | Custom Leather Designs. This is leather stamping tutorial that I will show you how to stamp a running W type border tool made by Craftool. The part number for the Craftool I am using is a number D74400 marked CRAFTOOL USA. The leather maul I like and use is made by Maul Master and is the economically priced mauls sold by The Weaver Leather Company. The part number for the maul I use in this YouTube Video is 65-2334 and it weighs 2 lbs and has 1-5/8″ striking surface. I also have the lighter Maul Master II and it weighs 22 oz. and it has the same width striking surface. I use the lighter maul for beveling and background work on my tooling and caving projects. I start off by marking a 3/8″ channel and cut the border with my Barry King Leather Tools swivel knife. I like cutting a border like this because it gives depth to my stamping design. Have patience with this leather tool and practice on some scrap leather before you do your actual leathercraft project. A running border stamp like this works and looks good on saddles, belts, guitar straps, billfolds, purses and many other custom leather projects.

Today I am making and sewing a simple style handmade leather wallet and machine stitching the wallet on my Cowboy CB4500 harness stitcher machine. The sewing machine thread I am using is white polyester size 346 and the needle in the machine is made by Schmetz made in Germany and is size 200. If you would like to use a smaller size thread you might consider size 207 and a size 180 Schmetz needle. The Cowboy CB4500 has a Servo motor which enables you to sew at the speed that is comfortable for you. I have sewn thick and thin leather with this machine and it works great for me.

Leathercraft Hack – BLADES and HANDLES

This video shows you leatherworking knives I use every day. Curved stub blades work the best for me and I think you will like them also. Here is a saddles makers secret your cutting pad makes a big difference in the life of your knifes cutting edge. A softer cutting pad like I use will keep your knife blade sharper longer. When sharpening your curved blade knife do not worry about the curved blade because it sharpen easily and fast. I use a India stone and the a Black Hard Arkansas for the finishing touch. I just got the LOCK-JAW T-1230_HNDL and am still learning how to use it one thing I really like about it is it really keeps the curved blade in place and it does not slip out.
Probably one of the neatest knife hacks is the Tandy Leather Flat-Side awl haft that actually holds the curve stub knife blade and the replacement curved blades that you can purchase for several different resources.
You may get a kick out of the Hyde Tools knife blades that I found after I put them up for forty years. They are No. 2 curve stub 23 gauge by Hyde Tools made in USA.
